I don't agree with what you have written. Jesus Christ came into the world to die on the cross for our sins (aka debts).
There are people out there who really struggle with their finances and they were in desperate need , and so they borrowed some money believing they could repay it and bad circumstances happened, being maybe redundancy or illness or even loss of bread provider etc.
They feel helpless and hopeless with their situation, isn't this the perfect situation to show the love of GOD to them, to reach out and reveal to them that although they have messed up, there is a GOD who loves them and understands them in their weaknesses.
JESUS CHRIST THE HOPE OF GLORY. AT THE CROSS IN CALVARY HE PAID IN FULL EVERY SIN - DEBT any man could, can or will commit.
So what is so wrong with christian debt counselling when they encourage the person to believe they are forgiven and that they do not have to struggle alone, that they can receive help from God through trained professional adviser who are led by the Holy Spirit to encourage and reassure people that they are loved right in the middle of their mess.
If we were meant to take care of everything ourselves we would not be in need of a our SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST.
The fact that they pray with you gives the people a sense of hope to a better future.

Steve this is a very well written and presented article and especially topical given the current climate. I think that this is a key area where christians can work to help deal with issues of poverty arising from debt problems. With so many debt consolidation companies out there, i personally feel that non profit debt consolidation is essential and what better way for christian organisations to express practical love and support than through this avenue

Jonathan@Friends&Moneys last blog post..How To Talk About Debt Problems With Family Members
