Sinking Into Debt Quicksand, Inch by Inch. – Diana

“Dear Steve,

Lost my job of 4 years when I was almost 5 months pregnant. Now my baby is 2 months old, I have a 6 year old boy and a 4 year old boy aswell. My “husband” ( not really married) of 8 years has been the backbone of the family, But I can’t help but notice that we keep sinking into a pit of quick sand inch by inch. just a few days ago they repossesed my vehicle for the second time, the first time was on Sept. 21 2009. I got a letter stating that I could no longer reinstate my vehicle, but only reddem it out, I dont have $13100. Help

The Answer:

Dear Diana,

We need to take a step back here and address the underlying communication about money first. Your husband could be feeling very inadequate as a provider for his family and his embarrassment and stress over the debt creates silence.

We can tackle the technical points but first I need for you to sit down with him and try to open up a non-judgmental channel of communication so you can both be open about where you both are in this mess. Try to find out how this situation is making him feel and if he is ready to work, as a team with you to deal with the debt situation so things can start inching up instead of down.

Let me know what happens from that by posting your feedback here. And then we’ll move on to the next step.

Big Hug!
