Can I Remove Myself From My Wife’s Credit Cards? – Chris

“Dear Steve,

Can make minimum monthly payments, but they are $1800.00 per month. Not a lot left over after paying all other bills.

Debt consolidation/relief: If most of our credit cards are in my wife’s name can I remove myself from them and have her get the debt relief. Therefore it affects her credit and not both of ours?

Chris”

The Answer:

Dear Chris,

If these are joint accounts then the creditor is not going to remove you until the balance is at zero or maybe even require the account to be at zero and closed.

There is no incentive for a creditor to let any obligated party off the hook with a balance.

Do you have any money in savings now? Do you have an emergency fund to fall back on instead of the credit cards?

Big Hug!
