Out of Texas is a story about three lawyers that were targeted with a bigger version of the fake certified check and money order scheme going around.
Bottom line: if someone sends you a money order or certified check that is for more than the services you are supposed to be paid for it might be a scam. At the very least, if you have any suspicion at all, wait for the check or money order to clear before you send back any money you were overpaid.
