My Debt Settlement Firm FBL Associates Won’t Answer the Phone and Now I’m Panicking. – Tony

“Dear Steve,

I was contacted by LGF(Life Guard Financial) one day explaining how they have my file and that I qualified for their help. They knew all my information (debt amount ,SSN, etc…) so it sounded more legit at the time.

They told me how President Obama passed laws to assist people like me get out of debt. With the whole new president thingy and having my information I thought it was for reals.

I was making all payments at the time just was drowning from interests and getting bad credit from high limits. Still I told them I wanted to do research first and they told me they are accredited by the BBB and all that.

After research I found nothing so stupidly thought that it was not scam. So I signed the contract to hand over my debt of 11 thousand which was only my credit card debt… They insisted me to also include my school loans but I told them if this worked I would re-entered the program. So after 6 months or so I begin seeing complaints of scams about LGF. They also changed there names.

I panicked and was about to cut them off but was told that my contract is now under the hands of FBL associates. After speaking to FBL Associates they put me back at eased. Gave me great customer service and explained to me every single step that they take to settle and also had a web site for me to see where my money was going and all the letters sent out to the creditors. Everything begin to make sense. 3 months ago I was notified by noteworld which is the escrow company that holds the funds and pay off creditors, they settled one of my accounts.

I was so happy and thought for once I made the right decision. Recently a new collector been calling me daily stating that they are from a law firm and wanted to work with me. I gave them FBL number and they said they could not reach anyone. Today I attempted to call FBL and could not connect to them either. It still has the FBL greetings and all but when you entered 1 for creditors or 2 for clients it would say this number is not in service. Now I am back to panicking again.

I never received anything in the mail regarding my settled account like they said I would. Though it shows in both the client website and escrow website. I have already paid most the fees and still see a reserve balance in the escrow. Not sure what to do. If anyone has dealt with this issue completely please help me. I’m truly sick of this feeling. I just want to be debt free and start all over.

What should I do? Should I follow through or stop paying them? How can I get out of this mess before being sued? Can I have the escrow release my money if I pulled the trigger? Can i hire an attorney to get refund?

Dear Tony,

When your debt relief company goes missing, everyone panics, including me.

Since you did not provide me with the telephone number you called I started the hunt for the number from scratch.

I went to their website at FBLAssociates.com and while the site has a link to contact us it only pulls up a complaint form. Really!!!! Why would a company have a complaint for for the contact us page unless there was a big issue? – Source

So then I went to the BBB and they list the number for FBL Associates as 877-346-2797 (source) but that was answered by Debt Relief Centers of America. They said they were not FBL Associates and I should call 877-605-3167. They said they were not FBL Associates and I should call 888-333-3860 but the person that answered the phone said this was not the number FBL Associate clients should call and she could not give out the number “if this is an investigation” but after some pushing she gave me 877-717-2791. (Nobody answers here. Just goes into perpetual hold.) Then a guy came on the phone while I was talking to the “I won’t tell you my name” person on 888-333-3860 and said calls for FBL Associates could be directed to Frank Linder, the President of FBL Associates at 215-292-1214. And that’s where I stopped chasing.

I have to admit, I’m really alarmed that a company that was holding itself out as a big law firm to represent debt settlement services, can’t be reached by phone and does not make their number available on their website.

I have no specific information that the company has gone bust but from the runaround I got and the quizzing from people I talked to that didn’t want to give out a phone number, it sure seems like FBL Associates is hiding from the world for some reason.

Since I don’t know what state you live in you might want to contact an attorney in your state that FBL Associates lists on their website, for additional information. They list a number of staff attorneys. – Source

Apparently some of the attorneys listed by FBL Associates had in fact no relationship with FBL and their names were promoted by FBL without their permission.     Hi i just read your article about the same scam i guess i was scammed to.I just finished a 2 yr program paid 291.00 a month and now after all this when my problems should be finished i can not get in contact with anyone by phone, emails .I wrote to the bbb and they wrote me they are out of business and gave me people to get in contact with in flordia.I now have a judgement against me and my credit is trashed.How in gods name is this legal? What can anyone do to stop this so others do not get trashed.I am so upset I truely believed i was doing the right thing to pay off my debt

    I was an attorney in FBL’s network but after one case I’m out for good.

    FBL sent me a collection case where their client was being sued by a credit card company.  Only when I talked with the client did I learn that he had been paying FBL $450.00 per month for 20 months and that FBL had done nothing to settle with his creditors beyond sending a couple of half assed emails to the Credit Card companies which never received any response. 

    Beyond those emails, FBL did nothing.

    Nevertheless, FBL continued soaking this guy for $450.00 per month and when he eventually got sued because of FBL’s lack of action, they threw up their hands and claimed it was not their problem. 

    Fortunately, due to the advice on this website, I was able to tell the client to cancel with FBL and demand a refund of the funds they were holding for him in trust.  He received a refund of a little less than half of the almost $9000.00 he’d sent them over the years and that money was enough to settle the lawsuit with the credit card company.

    On top of all that, FBL stiffed me and never paid for the legal services I provided.  I’ve sent several invoices to various people at FBL and still no response. 

    So for lawyers and for debtors — STAY AWAY!

    Not sure what to think.  I hope this pans out for everyone still involved.  What i can say is that i was distraught trying to find the correct info for this company/companies including Lifeguard Financial but i some how navigated through google after calling one of their “staff” lawyers.  The information above is accurate.

    They appear to be a company that has it together…. But, is FBL still their biggest account?? I dont think they are even operating except to continue to steal fee $$ from clients that are trusting them. Noteworld- What is going on at FBL? Your rep told this man to stick it out; What do you say now??/

I am dealing with a client who is facing a judgment with our office on a secured loan. While discussing the issue with this client he had mentioned that he was enrolled with FBL & ASSOCIATES and provided me with what I assumed to be much needed information to contact FBL and start negotiations in an attempt to help settle the account. I was provided a number (888) 333-3860 but was also told by this client that he had made attempts to contact them and was unsuccessful. So I tried and I too had no luck getting through to a live party. All I got was a recording stating “all agents are currently on the other line, please press one to leave a message” and then the call ends no way of leaving a message to say the least. I did some research and skip tracing via Google and typed the company name and other keywords that might be useful. I found a phone number 850-414-3300 so I called and it turned out to be the state’s AG’s office… I spoke with a female rep there and Identified myself and reason for my call. I asked how they’re number was linked to FBL and Associates? She did some research on her database and found that the state had a few cases against FBL & Associates and Partner company Lifeguard Financial. She stated that complaints were brought forth against them due to companies and clients complaints about non payments and fees that were owed. FBL and Associates/ Lifeguard Financial also failed to respond to some Affidavits. I have yet to make any contact with anybody there. If you currently have any issues with this company I advise you to call the state AG at 850-414-3300 they might be able to assist you.

    I did a limited amount of work for FBL and ceased all affilaition with them as I found them to be unprofessional. Clients complained that they were not returning phone calls and they also did not return mine.

    Try calling early because they close at 12pm eastern time. Once you go through all the messages hit #1. Should lead you to live rep. Hope this help…

    Okay, so I finally got a chance to connect with a live person at FBL to check on the status of my account. Heard some disturbing things in the beginning of the call before connecting to live person. Safetrust and PNE no longer working with FBL? Then LifeGuard still working with FBL. Thank god i was with LGF. But how much longer before LGF gets disconnected from FBL. What will I do then? Have not been in contact with LGF over a year now. So I drilled the FBL rep to see what was going on with my accounts. She says that FBL is just a legal service for when you get sued. And that ESP is a software that just generate proposal to the creditor. Its up to them to accept or not. I completed my payments in Dec. 2010. I said why did LGF say that all settlements would be completed by completion of program. She says that is not true. They have been sending out the maximum proposal for the last 2 monthes and still no answer from creditor. I asked if they have contacted any of my creditor live. She says they do not do that. Only through the email proposal. Wow…this sounds bad…She then said she would email their settlement dept to see what they can do…This is beginning to sound like nothing will happen to me accounts until i get sued. I think I am about to venture on my own to try and settle my accounts by myself. If anyone has any experience with settling their own accounts please email me at [email protected] for some advise. Would be much appreciated. So hope I can help answer anyones question or concerns out there. I don’t think FBL is a working method to settle your debt!!!! I really don’t think our creditor knows what the hell is going on. These debt settlement programs are all bull@@@@. Get out now if you can and do not sign up if your planning too.

I cannot talk with a human, only leave messages that have not been answered, and e-mails that have not been answered! Noteworld states the company is still in business and has e-mailed them twice for me and marked them urgent so I can get a response to some of my questions! Still no response from FBL associates. I just cancelled any further payments to noteworld….I have paid in over $6000.00 but since FBL takes their fees off the top there is only $1400.oo in my account that I would get as a refund!!!! I understand they take their fees for doing their job, but as far as I can tell none of my creditors have ever been contacted over the last 6 months and now I am getting the nasty legal notices and their is no legal department to contact to help represent us that was promised!! We n eed a class action lawsuit because someone is taking my money and has broken their contract because NOTHING has been done with my creditors!!!

    I was in the program at FBL for about 15 months. At first they did settle one card, which was great, but after that they didn’t do much. I kept calling and they would reassure me that everyting was fine and thet were working hard to settle my debt. As time passed I recieved two diffrent summons from two of my credit card companies, they were suing me and I had thirty days to respond. I was suppose to finish the program in 18 months and I realized that wasn;t going to be possible. I called FBL again, and one of their pepole from the legal dept. told me my best bet was to file bankruptcy. I freaked out and asked them what exactly were they doing for me. Honestly she panicked and couldn’t answer me. I took matters into my own hands and started calling all the debt collecters that my debt had been sold to. Guess what they settled for about 40 percent. Stop paying all those fees and put save your money in your own seperate account, and call these people and tell them your going to have to file bankruptcy or they can take what your offering. THEY WILL WORK WITH YOU!!! FBL IS A SCAM. The best part is I can log on and they still say they are sending letters to my creditors to settle. Pretty funny since I settled them all on my own. Get your money out of NOTEWORLD today and quit paying all those fees! Good Luck to YOU. Jami from MI

    Thanks for all your guys help, support, and opinions. Sorry I have not updated recently. I was so overwhelmed with this issue that I totally forgot. We I did contact the escrow company(Noteworld) and explained my situation and asked if I could withdrawl whatever that is left in the account and she said abaolutely. As for contacting FBL, she became alarmed and told me that this was the first she had heard of FBL going MIA. She said that FBL is Noteworld biggest client and that it was odd for FBL to go missing because they are pretty reliable…She told me that she would put in a note to there sales dept. and have them contact FBL for me and relay a message to call me back. Since my next scheduled payment was up in 2 weeks she said give it up until then to call back and stop all payments. Then they would just reverse all funds in escrow back into my bank account. She was even nice enough to offer to call me back two days before payment date to let me know if they were able to contact FBL. So I waited it out praying and hoping that they would somehow just re-appear. Well a week after I got a message from her on my voicemail stating that they were able to contact FBL and everything was fine. Give them a call at the 1-888-333-3860 number. So i did and to my suprise someone picked up! I told her that I have been trying to contact her the last 2 weeks and that I was worried. She asked what number I called and I gave her both numbers. She apologized and told me the number with the 954 area code was just a number that rerouted to the 888 number and that they had recently updated their phone system and esp solution system. That is probably why that old number is no longer in service and that I should call this number from now on for client services. I didn’t know what to think. So I asked her status of my account and she explained everything and gave me the customer service like I’ve never seen one. Breaking everything down. Said she saw that one account was settled. She said another proposal would be sent out after my upcoming payment is recieved since I would have enough funds in my escrow. I told her about the Richard & Clark law firm that has been calling me regarding one of the account. She told me that they are just another collection and that I should fax them the law firm contacts. So all in all, FBL is still there…From talking to the rep it didn’t seem as if they are going anywhere or if anything funny is going on. So I have decided to just ride this program out for these reasons. 1) They did actually settle one of my larger debt. 2) They have already taken all their fees and I would only lose the $49 main. fee monthly for the last 7 payments. 3) The majority of my money is still in escrow and could be released upon my approval. 4) I would not know what to do with my debt if I gave up on this program. So do you think I’ve done everything I should and am I making the right decision? One weird thing is that even though I’ve threaten to go to all the sources you told me to go to, they still did not have anyone call me back to re-assure me that everything is still being taken cared of. I dunno. I have 6 months left on the program and will keep you all updated.

So i did and to my suprise someone picked up! I told her that I have been trying to contact her the last 2 weeks and that I was worried. She asked what number I called and I gave her both numbers. She apologized and told me the number with the 954 area code was just a number that rerouted to the 888 number and that they had recently updated their phone system and esp solution system. That is probably why that old number is no longer in service and that I should call this number from now on for client services. I didn’t know what to think. So I asked her status of my account and she explained everything and gave me the customer service like I’ve never seen one. Breaking everything down. Said she saw that one account was settled. She said another proposal would be sent out after my upcoming payment is recieved since I would have enough funds in my escrow. I told her about the Richard & Clark law firm that has been calling me regarding one of the account. She told me that they are just another collection and that I should fax them the law firm contacts. So all in all, FBL is still there…From talking to the rep it didn’t seem as if they are going anywhere or if anything funny is going on. So I have decided to just ride this program out for these reasons. 1) They did actually settle one of my larger debt. 2) They have already taken all their fees and I would only lose the $49 main. fee monthly for the last 7 payments. 3) The majority of my money is still in escrow and could be released upon my approval. 4) I would not know what to do with my debt if I gave up on this program. So do you think I’ve done everything I should and am I making the right decision? One weird thing is that even though I’ve threaten to go to all the sources you told me to go to, they still did not have anyone call me back to re-assure me that everything is still being taken cared of. I dunno. I have 6 months left on the program and will keep you all updated.

      I was in the program at FBL for about 15 months. At first they did settle one card, which was great, but after that they didn’t do much. I kept calling and they would reassure me that everyting was fine and thet were working hard to settle my debt. As time passed I recieved two diffrent summons from two of my credit card companies, they were suing me and I had thirty days to respond. I was suppose to finish the program in 18 months and I realized that wasn;t going to be possible. I called FBL again, and one of their pepole from the legal dept. told me my best bet was to file bankruptcy. I freaked out and asked them what exactly were they doing for me. Honestly she panicked and couldn’t answer me. I took matters into my own hands and started calling all the debt collecters that my debt had been sold to. Guess what they settled for about 40 percent. Stop paying all those fees and put save your money in your own seperate account, and call these people and tell them your going to have to file bankruptcy or they can take what your offering. THEY WILL WORK WITH YOU!!! FBL IS A SCAM. The best part is I can log on and they still say they are sending letters to my creditors to settle. Pretty funny since I settled them all on my own. Get your money out of NOTEWORLD today and quit paying all those fees! Good Luck to YOU. Jami from MI

I recently sent the letter in the “How to get a big refund” style and received the return receipt last week with a name on it. So at least there still is someone there, in Fort Lauderdale unless it was the doorman who signed the receipt… I gave them until September 15th to get me a refund. Now I am waiting for news.

    If FBL isn’t even returning your calls, it’s likely they’re not in contact with your creditors either. You might want to contact the escrow account servicer and ask them to return your reserves to you asap. Then contact the remaining creditors yourself and see what you can work out.

    Thanks for all of your help. Sorry I forgot to add the phone numbers I called and made you go through the run around that I did. The number that I have always contacted them was 954-237-8265. That number for some reason pass the greetings to any extension is now out of service. I got a number 1-888-333-3860 from thier website and too was put on hold for nearly an hour before reaching someone. asked if this was FBL Associates? He said he would connect me and another perpetual hold. Called back and no answer this time. So I went on the website to contact the staff attorney([email protected] 951-200-7682) provided on their site. Emailed him and got a response right away. He said he is indeed working for FBL Associates but only handled their cases when one of their clients have been sued. He says that he still contact with them freq. So he got all my information down and wrote them an email to call me back. No response. So I just wrote him a final letter stating that I have been calm and tried numerous time via phone and email to contact FBL Associates. I had him relay a message that if I do not get a call from FBL Associates to provide me with the service I signed up for or explain the situation that I would report FBL Associates and all its accomplices to the Attorney General’s Office, The Better Business Bureau, Federal Trade Comissions, Consumer Affairs, The Debt Settlement Trade Associations, My local News Station, and the Bar Associations. Hopefully I can get a response soon. I did contacted the creditor that FBL Associates stated that they were able to settle with and it is indeed settled. I am so hoping that this just work it self out. I am only 7 payments away from completing program. I don’t know what to do. Praying that this is not a scam. After all they did settle one account. I see enough money in the escrow account for another account to be settled. Now they disappeared. Please let me know what you think my next step should be. I am so stressed because one of the accounts have seen sent to a law firm to collect. They have been leaving me voicemails daily to work something out but have ignored them as im instructed to do so. Do you think a lawsuit is around the corner? Look forward to hearing your advice.
