There are so many mortgage reduction scam companies out there that you are correct to be concerned about finding an honest company.
Many try to charge an advance fee for help but the FTC Mortgage Assistance Relief Services Rule makes it illegal for most to do that.
I would first start withe the government subsidized help provided by a HUD Housing Counselor. You can find a HUD Housing Counselor to talk to by following the link.
