Dear Gene,

Thanks for coming back for advice.

Unfortunately I’m not at all clear what type of intervention you need. The term “debt consolidation” is used interchangeably by credit counseling groups, debt settlement companies, and sometimes even bankruptcy attorneys.

When I think of debt consolidation I tend to think about unsecured loans like those available from LendingClub.com.

So absent any specifics, let’s start with a look at all the options.

Once you’ve identified a company you want to work with, then follow my step-by-step guide on what you should look for and expect from a good debt relief company.
