OfflineMya,
I am sure this is a difficult time and in the instance of a garnishment you are to be allowed a certain amount of money to live on and pay your basic bills.
Have you spoke with who has issued the garnishment and also with Social Security as what options you may have?
The fact that you are receiving SSDI may be in your favour to try and have the student loans discharged.
This link may help in explaining this.
Depending on what benefits you do receive, you maybe able to get Social Security to appoint a caseworker or counsellor to help you with this.
Let me know how you get on with this.

I am here shaking, trying to figure out what to do. My SSDI HAS BEEN GARNISHED by the Department of Education. This is because of a $50,000 debt, only $20,000 of which is actual loan funds. The rest is accumulated interest, penalties, & fees, despite the fact that the loans have been variously deferred, in forbearance, etc all of this time. Perhaps 2 years ago, I got a letter from the Dept of the Treasury stating my SSDI could be Garnished at any time, with no further Notification–also neither they nor the SSA would have any answers "Don't call us"–pretty much.
My question is, this Garnishment places me FAR below the Poverty Level. I cannot pay rent–much less utilities. How might I go about getting the Garnishment Reversed & try to have the loan discharged– or in an acceptable status to the Dept of Ed? Help me please! Neither SSA nor Dept of Ed advised me my check would be changing!
