I agree with ParisGirl111 and think the best protection any consumer can use is investigation and information. When you contact any debt relief or credit counseling company, don't feel as if you need to make a decision on the spot to go with them. Get the facts and then spend a day or so pondering if it is the best option for you.
Be sure to investigate multiple options to make sure you are using the right one for your situation. Anyone that is having financial problems and is thinking of looking into credit counseling, I think should also meet with a local bankruptcy attorney as well to compare solutions, options and benefits of each.
Thanks for the comment ParisGirl111.

Heather,
The best way to determine if a credit counseling agency can assist you is to call them. Most reputable counseling agencies provide you with a free financial assessment which consists of a budget and net worth. From there, they can tell you if you would be able to use one of their programs. Most of the time it is based on your budget and what you can afford. So, they are going to need to get specific information from you to determine if they are able to help you. Be sure whatever agency you decide to call that you get everything in writing before agreeing to anything and that you review the companies profile with the better business bureau.

OfflineHello Heather,
Given the limited information that you have shared I am not able to help you determine what strategy is going to be the best approach for you moving forward. However, given the amount of your debt it is very important to take your time and thoroughly research every option available before making a decision. Do not let any sales person rush you into anything that you haven't researched and don't fully understand.
IF you can give me some further information about your situation I can help guide you to the strategy that will make the most sense given your circumstances and goals.
Questions:
1. How much can you afford every month to allocate toward paying down this debt?
2. What does your credit score look like?
3. What is your number one financial goal?
4. What options have you researched?
5. What strategy do you think makes the most sense for you at this time?
6. Have you had any recent financial hardships that have created your current situation, or has this just been gradually creeping up on you and finally has come to a breaking point?
If you can answer these questions for me and provide me with any further insight to your situation, I will give you the pros and cons of the different options available.

My husband and I have accumulated over 110,000 in unsecured debt. I do not want to file bankruptcy. Would a progam like INCHARGE or Money Management be able to help me. I can no longer even afford to pay the minimum balances. Please help. I want to pay my debt and not incur any more.
Will a debt management program help me or is my only option bankruptcy?
