Dear ChevGirl,

Not that long ago i wrote an article about getting out of debt from a Christian point of view. You can read it here.

I am so sorry that your debt is causing stress and hardship in your marriage. Those feeling seem to emerge as a byproduct of fear, loss and blame rather than as the result of anything either of you did. In a perfect world it would be much better for the two of you to sit down and have a quiet and open conversation about what you are feeling and why you think you each feel that way.

Here is what I have seen over the years of helping others and enjoying the luxury of observing these situations as a third party.

When you are up against the wall and the bills feel like they are closing in on you it is normal for people to feel tension and stress. I have found that a big component is the regret and pain that it creates in our lives because of lifestyle changes that reduced income impose.

When everything was going along great, we tend to enjoy a certain lifestyle. Maybe that is going out to eat more often, weekend trips, techno-gadget toys, clothes, or whatever. We begin to feel entitled to those luxuries and when our income can no longer support those things we begin to feel cheated and angry. Certainly we work hard and deserve to have those things, at least that is what we say to ourselves. The reality is that we are entitled to nothing, not even our next breath. In a relationship, one person is typically the saver and the other one is the spender. It’s true, opposites do attract. In times of trouble the saver will blame the spender for all the troubles. That’s not fair. If that issue is not addressed in good times then throwing it up as the cause in bad times is not helpful and when it does happen, it causes relationship problems.

Money worries also cause irrational fear, depression and anxiety. They create a worry about what tomorrow will bring and real trepidation about what will happen next. That’s a whole lot of stress for one or two people to deal with. That stress tends to manifest itself as curt conversations, strange looks, tense voices, lack of intimacy, no love, no tenderness, depression, fatigue, headaches, anxiety, forgetfulness, and on and on.

All those secondary issues are just the symptoms of the underlying issue, the money stress. Until that is addressed, all these other things don’t typically get better.

So let’s look at your situation. It sounds like you are in over your head. You have three choices:

1. File Bankruptcy – You can contact a bankruptcy attorney through this link and find a local bankruptcy lawyer to help you to go bankrupt. Bankruptcy is a legal, logical and reasonable path for many to follow when faced with overwhelming debt and no expectation that it can be repaid as the creditors demand. The only downside here is that you need to clearly think through your personal opinions about your faith and bankruptcy to make sure you are not creating any secondary guilt if you decide that bankruptcy is the best path for you to follow.
2. Pay What You Can Afford – You could either pay your creditors what you can afford or try a credit counseling or debt management program to get one consolidated monthly payment and see if that is sustainable for you. Unless you can make all of the five to seven years of payments then you may be throwing good money after bad. But a credit counseling program may certainly be a reasonable holding tank for you while you decide. The debt management approach may diminish some of the collection pressure you are feeling at the moment.
3. Do Nothing – Doing nothing is always an option but almost never a good one. However, if you are uncertain about what to do right now, take a nothing break for a week or so, investigate your options and then decide on a course of action to follow.

As you travel on this journey I have seen many a marriage end in divorce over debt problems. Many of those relationships didn’t have to end that way if the couples had found a way to communicate and work together as a team rather than working against each other through blame and anger.

Ganhuyag Tuya is 22 and the married father of one. His family lives on the plot of land he owns in Arhanghay, one of the Mongolian central provinces. This group’s leader, Zamira, is 28 from Karabalta, Kyrgyzstan. She earns her living by milking her cows and selling 15 liters of milk daily. Her husband, apart from helping her look after cows, works as a plumber. She has two children, a little son and a daughter. Six years ago, Zamira and her husband started dealing with real estate. After successfully selling some of their property, they bought a cow and a calf. They took a risk to put in $625, which was quite a large sum of money at that time. Now, they have turned it into a monthly income of $100. By means of saving money, they have obtained some necessary equipment for her husband’s work and a car.

Zamira and her husband need a loan to buy another cow. This would enable them breed their cattle and increase its population.

“Everything we do, we do for the sake of our children. Our son is growing up. Very soon, he will be going to school. So we need to purchase everything needed for his education, including stationary and (a) school uniform,” says Zamira.

Taalaibek, Suyorbubu and Kayir are in the same group with Zamira. Taalaibek is 40. He is married and has three children. Taalaibek provides for his family by collecting milk from local villagers and producing milk products. He sells these products in the city of Alma Ata. He needs a loan to purchase sheep and cows and to increase turnover.

Kayir is 44. She sells yogurt that she produces from her cow’s milk, or from milk that she buys from other villagers. She urgently needs a new fridge to put the milk products in since the old one cannot contain all of her products. She cannot buy a fridge unless she obtains a loan.

Suyorbubu is a housewife. She keeps a cow and sells milk. Some years ago she obtained a loan and bought a car. Since then, by selling milk she has managed to save enough money to buy new furniture for her son. She wants to obtain a loan to purchase calves and feed for them. After fattening them up, she is going to resell them.

“Even though raising livestock requires certain amount of efforts, it is not that troublesome. In a rural area like ours, it is the most convenient business,” says Suyorbubu with enthusiasm.

Betty Nansubuga is the leader of the Nyikira Okole group in Kikajjo, Uganda. She is a very hardworking 30-year-old mother of 2 children, aged 4 and 7, who also cares for 2 orphans belonging to her late sister. Betty has owned and operated the Seaman Bar for 3 years, and so far her business is good. It’s from the profits derived from the bar that she is able to pay school fees for her dependents plus their general care. She hopes to expand the bar with more space, and more beers and sodas, once she has access to the loan, since she hopes to buy a plot of land with the proceeds. She still has her hopes of one day owning a beer and soda depot to be able to supply other retailers.

When Oscar first arrived in Miami he found work as a housekeeper, working for wealthy residents of an apartment building in a good part of town. Oscar’s friendly personality won over the residents of the building, and he began to get referrals.

One year ago, with experience in the business and a good outlook for his future, Oscar decided to stop working for the company and to start his own cleaning service. He now does maintenance and upkeep for seven commercial buildings and apartments, spending two hours a day at each location.

Clorinda is 42 years old. She is a very hardworking mother with 4 children, 3 of whom live in her house in Peru. Clorinda has been working everyday since she was very young because agriculture is the only activity that she knows and that has been yielding great profits all these years. For this reason, she really likes her potato and oca (a root vegetable) crops. Thanks to them, her children have not experienced financial difficulties.

Sometimes she also works on her neighbors’ farms, where she gets paid 12 PEN daily, including lunch. With this money, she can pay for her elderly mother’s expenses and for her children’s studies. However, when she has to cultivate her own crop fields, Clorinda and her husband make it a priority until they end up sending their products to market. She has made the most of her previous earnings by purchasing some cows, selling their milk at 1.5 PEN a liter. Furthermore, her cows keep having more and more calves. For this reason, she hopes to purchase more cows, which will increase the household income.

The rest of the members are on their tenth loan with MFP, while Clorinda is on her eighth loan because she joined the microfinance institute a year after it was formed. Nevertheless, she feels very happy because she has been saving money with her group. The money that she is now requesting will be used in purchasing fungicides to eradicate the pests that attack her potatoes and oca. She will also invest in purchasing chemical fertilizer.

Jorge is an experienced entrepreneur who has worked very hard for what he has today. 33-year old Gemima lives in Peru with her husband and their two children who attend primary school. For the last year she has been working as a street vendor selling fish in various places in the area. She does this work from six to eleven in the morning, and in the afternoons she sells jello and lollipops in a park close to her house. Gemima enjoys her work as it keeps her active; she puts in a lot of effort because of her wish to make a better life for her children.

Her business is profitable as she has regular customers who buy fish from her, and also the desserts and lollipops sell very quickly because of the region’s hot climate.

In the future, Gemima wants to have a stall built so that she can sell her products more peacefully, and not have to walk the streets in the terrible sun.

She has already had three loans with Kiva partner, MFP, and is very happy with the community bank because all her fellow members work hard and are reliable. Her husband’s job is to provide the fish for the stalls at one of the markets in the town; he sells the fish at wholesale prices. With the loan Gemima plans to both increase her husband’s products and also the amount that she herself sells.

With support from Microinvest, Mihail has faced many difficulties in his life in Moldovato build a viable agricultural business and provide a future for his wife and two children.

She is the only one to be in this kind of business in her neighborhood, which is very helpful for her undertaking. She has been in business since 2002 and she buys her inventory in the north of Togo. Daisy is already 30 years old. She is a business minded woman who is married to Tito Mellares, who works as a tricycle operator in their village in the Philippines. Her family is very religious that is why their four children are all named after the bible names. Their eldest is Apo Calypsis, 11 years old, second is Tessalonica, 6 years old, third is Acaya, 5 years old and the youngest is Macedonia, who is 7 months old. Their family peacefully lives in the village of Cabaruan, Naguilian, Isabela. Their children are all loving and obedient. They always help each other in their household chores and in their studies.

Daisy is engaged in a vending business that serves as her source of income. She sells vegetables, fish, rice, cooked snacks like “pancit” (a type of noodle dish) and other different food products. With her business, she is gaining an income of 300 pesos daily and it is really of big help to her husband to provide for their family’s needs. For almost two years she has been operating her vending business, Daisy is still not able to increase her income from her business. Thus she wanted to avail a loan amounting to PHP 3,000 for the productivity and improvement of her vending. The loan will be of big help to make her business profitable and will help to support the needs of her children, especially their educational needs.

“I am happy because I have a complete family. God has really given me a responsible husband who works so hard to provide our family needs,” says Rosita Barrios, 54-year-old mother of three children. “My husband owns a small parcel of land that he inherited from his parents. First off, let me be perfectly clear that I think that being too frugal, sucks.

I remember some time ago I was chatting with my friend Michelle Singeltary, who writes for the Washington Post, and she was telling me about all sorts of frugal tips readers had shared with her. Right or wrong, I am not cutting the tops off milk jugs to capture shower water to reuse it. Nor am I going to wash paper plates to reuse them. Those might be perfectly good frugal ideas but, I’ll pass for now.

What I have done is really focused on reducing my reliance on the grid. And no, I am not one of those bearded hermits living in the middle of a desert in a shack, armed to the teeth.

This last house that we bought when we returned to America a year ago has a well and septic system. I no longer have a water or sewage bill. Thank goodness. In our house before, that bill just kept creeping up and up, even though our water usage did not.

We’ve also recently embarked on an ambitious journey to reduce our electric bill. The journey did involve making an investment in the house but the pay back will accelerate as energy costs increase. My bet is that as the economy rebounds, which it will, heating and cooling the home will only get progressively more expensive. If we address these issues now, it will be cheaper for us to live moving forward.

So, what have I done so far:

• Added Insulation: We’ve added a lot of additional insulation in the attic and sealed and insulated the crawl space. This increases the coat around our house so it costs less to heat and cool.
• Solar Panels: We have a solar panel system that will be installed on the house. It will generate a percentage of our total power, not all, but we are focusing on reducing our electricity consumption so hopefully the two will get close. With the 65% tax credit of the cost of the system and the power buy back by the utility company, the investment is palatable and will reduce our electric costs by half.
• Replaced Light Bulbs: We replaced all our light bulbs with compact florescent or LED lights to immediately reduce our energy consumption.
• Geo-Thermal: I investigated changing our heat pumps for geothermal but the best configuration of the system is one called “pump and dump.” We would use water from our well, run it through the system and dump it out on the ground. I don’t want to waste water like that and a ground loop configuration is not feasible, too many trees. We could drill new wells for the geo-thermal but that’s too expensive.
• Heat Pump Cooling: We made a small investment in a device that cools our current heat pumps, lowering the air temperature around them as they run. Makes sense but we’ll have to see how it works out. I loved the idea of the Cool-N-Save approach when I was sitting in Athens, Italy at an outdoor cafe. It was so blazing hot out but the small water misters kept us comfortably cool. So we are using the same approach to lower the air temp of the air being drawn across the cooling fins of the heat pump, increasing its efficiency, lowering the amount it would need to run.
• One Car: We only own one car, a Honda minivan, and one motorcycle, for transportation. I ride the motorcycle for fun and enjoy the 50 MPG it gets. If we run into times when we need two cars, which is rare, we just rent one for the day. That lowers our overall transportation costs. No second car payment or insurance costs. Although I am still just a tad bitter that my lovely wife dented the minivan right after we got it. It’s a small dent and on the upside, I no longer have to worry about the first dent anymore and it helps me to find mine with other similar ones parked at the mall.
• Whole House Fan: We are using our A/C much less. The house already had ceiling fans in it when we bought it. So we keep the windows open and the fans on to help cool the house. But we are going to get a whole house fan that will pull air through the house and vent it out the attic. We have some friends that have a whole house fan and their home is comfortable in the summer without running the air conditioning.
• Our Garden: We planted a summer garden filled with all sorts of tasty treats. Not only will we eat better but rather than having to run to the store or dash out for some fast food, we’ll actually have tasty goodies, lazily available just outside our back door. So why am I doing all of this stuff? The lower my living costs are, the less I need to earn. The less I need to earn, the less I need to work. So that means that the money that I earn all comes from stuff I love to do each day instead of dreaded work.

I have no commute, I listen to the birds singing outside my open window, I write, and I help people for free. If I want to take a break I go for a motorcycle ride or go play with my photography.

The secret in all of this is that the less you owe others, the less in debt that you are, the less financial commitments you have to others; the more pleasure you get out of just enjoying life. I admit it, I’ve walked into a blessed life but the lesson to be learned here is that you can too.
