Consumer Complaint: I received a collection notice fro m Hunter-Warfield claiming that I owed {$700.00} principle and {$51.00} interest. The debt was supposedly being collected on behalf of XXXX XXXX XXXX , the owner of an apartment I rented, the notice was dated XXXX / XXXX / XXXX . I moved out of the apartment in XXXX XXXX , the end of the lease, and the property manager told me everything was fine and I did n’t owe anything. A year later I received the collection notice. I called Hunter-Warfield and requested a copy of the contract, and validation of the debt, which they are required by law to provide, according to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act ( 15USC1692 ). On XXXX / XXXX / XXXX Hunter-Warfield admitted over the phone that they do not have the contract or validation of the debt. They told me they would stop trying to collect, and would contact the credit bureaus to correct the situation. They said they are unable to provide a written statement that they have done so, and they also are unable to close my case, all they can to is stop trying to collect. They claim that they are unable to cancel the collection. If they do n’t have the contract or validation, they have to cancel the collection. I am pretty sure that in 6 months to a year they will attempt to collect this debt again, that is why they wo n’t provide a written statement or close the case. They were illegally trying to collect a debt that I never owed, and they certainly never had any evidence that I did, and they are keeping the case open so they can try to harass me again in the future. I am certain their response will be ” company believes the complaint is a result of a misunderstanding ”.
