Consumer Complaint: I contacted Kohl ‘s regarding a past credit card account that has been negatively reported to XXXX and other credit bureaus. The amount of the debt is incorrect. When speaking with the company, they ask for verification information such as address, social security number, phone number, etc. They did not inform me they are a debt collector and that this is an attempt to collect a debt. They proceed to tell me that I owe a balance and I can pay a balance. When I informed them that the balance they ‘re mentioning is incorrect, they tell me that there is no way to dispute the balance. I ask for proof and verification of the balance according to their records and they told me they have no way of providing me with proof. This has happened on three separate occasions.
Finally, today, XXXX XXXX, 2017, I contacted them yet again to get clarification on the balance. They inform me of the collection agency that is collecting on their behalf. I reach out to the agency regarding the debt and they tell me that they have a restriction placed from Kohl ‘s ( Capital One ) not to contact me at all. They tell me they also have no way of verifying the debt and ca n’t provide me proof of the charges or a breakdown. They offer a settlement and I inform them I am disputing the validity of the debt and my right as a consumer has been violated. They tell me I can email, fax or mail out a letter to them and they will get it back to Kohl ‘s. They say that normally this is an attempt to collect a debt, but as of right now it is not.
