Consumer Complaint: I was contacted by Gurstel Law Firm, XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, MN – about an old debt. It was a debt that was supposed to be paid by an employer, but alas it wasn’t and was in my name. Regardless, I made a {$250.00} payment towards the roughly {$1000.00} debt. I was going to make monthly payments.

I did’t get a single additional piece of paper – and the agent claims that he called me multiple times ( I don’t have any voicemails ). Notably I wasn’t EVER notified in writing about the total amount due – or the amount they ending up taking from the account. OR that they were going to garnish the account – never a single piece of paper. How is that legal?

Today I checked my bank account and they had taken over {$1000.00}. When I called the number the bank suggested the agent mentioned that despite the debt being just {$820.00} they take up to 10 % more to cover additional costs. 2 days before XXXX so there is no chance for me to get this handled or fixed before then. I am left with a sum total of {$27.00} in my checking and {$13.00} in my savings.

How can this be OK when I had made a large payment to them and made intention to pay AND THEN call because my bank mentions that they can reverse it and you can make payments ( as I was originally intending ) and he said that they wouldn’t do that unless I was on state assistance ( food stamps ) This has to be the most backwards, dishonest, misleading company. Not only is it NOT A LAW Firm – its debt collection firm, but they lie to you about the pretense of making payment. i would NEVER had made a payment to him had i known they would have stored hat information and then deducted it from the account later. I now have no money and if I wasn’t going to be on state assistance – now I’m going to be – how the XXXX am I supposed to get to work and eat for the next two weeks – obviously making XXXX dinner is out, despite saving up for a month and a half.
