I’ve Been Blocked From Attending School Because of a Debt

Written by Steve Rhode

Question:

Dear Steve,

21 YR OLD STUDENT DEBT OF 1800 SURFACED WHEN I APPLIED AT A SCHOOL AND ALTHOUGH I WAS ACCEPTED TO THE SCHOOL I HAVE BEEN BLOCKED ADMITTANCE DUE TO THIS DEBT.I FILED FAFSA AND THAT WAS ACCEPTED. I HAVE BEEN BLOCKED FROM THE SCHOOL.HOW SHOULD THIS BE ADDRESSED

CAN I GET HELP TO PAY THIS AMOUNT WITHOUT REPERCUSSION.I AM ON SSDI PRESENTLY.

Scott

Answer:

Dear Scott,

It is not clear exactly what this debt is from or who it is owed to. If it is a previous debt owed to the school and not related to federal student loans then it could be possible for the school to stop you from enrolling until you satisfy a past debt due.

But more information is needed on the debt before I can provide more guidance. Can you please post an update in the comments below with more information.

I’d also like to know what your plan is for going back to school and taking out federal student loans when you are living on SSDI. Have you determined you will be able to earn enough following graduation to repay your student loans even though you are disabled?
