The IRS Took My Refund Check for My Student Loan. – Pebbles

The IRS took my refund check to my student loan.

Can the IRS take my refund check if my interest has been paid on my student loans and i am having them garnished every month? My loans have been consolidated. This is the second refund they took in the last two years.


Dear Pebbles,

Yes. Until your loan is paid in full the Department of Education will notify the IRS that you owe money and your refund check will be intercepted. The easy solution is to adjust your withholding so you are not due a big refund at the end of the year and you’ll get more in your check each month.
