Many of the debt-relief companies that charge up-front fees to consumers likely will go out of business, said Sarah Leineke, co-owner of Phoenix-based Nationwide Debt Settlement.
“All those bad guys are going down now,” she said. “A lot of these companies pay themselves first, so it will shut them down now. It’s not going to shut me down by any means. I don’t charge up front.”
The problem, she said, is there are more bad companies than good ones.
“All I can say is I really hope that the FTC can see the need for these types of debt programs, because they are absolutely necessary,” said Leineke.
