What Am I Going to Do When I Lose My Granddaughter’s Survivor Benefits? – Susan

“Dear Steve,

I am a widow who is raising my 16 yr.old grandaughter, She recieves about 1010.00 each month survivors benefits. I recieve 753.00 diability, and 358.00 widows bnefits. I am strangling here. My mortgage payment is 1038.00 monthly. I’m in debt with medical bills and credit card debt. Use credit cards for food, etc. no luxuries. When she turns 18 I will lose that benefit she gets. I’ve tried to refinance, but have been denied, because of credit score. I’m desperate. With utilities and monthly debt, I’m always in the hole. Robbing Peter to pay Paul. the only help we get from state is medicaid, for my grandaughter, that will run out when she turns 18.

What in Gods name do I do???

Dear Susan,

There are government benefit programs that can help supplement your living costs and that’s certainly something to look in to. But as amazing as America is, there is a huge vast chasm that exists for people that can’t care for themselves.

The good news is you are looking at the situation now. The bad news is that the only logical solution seems to be to sell your house and find Section 8 housing to live in. It won’t be long now before the survivor benefits are gone and once that happens, then you will go from the one in a bit of control and able to make decisions to having no control and people making decision for you, like foreclosure.

Please update me on your progress by posting updates here in the comments section of your question. I’m very interested in how this works out for you.
