If I call chase to negotiate a settlement of this $8,000, and I have about $5,000 on hand. will they negotiate low enough that I can pay them off. I do not want to go through a lawyer. but do it myself,…What are your thoughts here.

I had considerable debt with Chase also and can happily report that Chase was one of the first and most cooperative debtors when I got into financial difficulties last year. I was able to set up a 5-year pay-off plan with an extremely low interest rate. Give Chase a call and work with them directly.
