Your Brain on Debt: The Free Quiz That Reveals What’s Really Driving Your Financial Decisions

Quick Answer: The “Your Brain on Debt” quiz is a free 20-question tool at GetOutOfDebt.org that identifies which emotional driver — survival mode panic, shame, high anxiety, or relative clarity — is most affecting your financial decision-making right now. Most debt advice focuses on the math. This quiz focuses on what’s actually happening in your head, because that’s what’s really running the show.

Part of a Research Series: This post is part of Why Financial Education Fails: The Research on Money Psychology and Behavior — a complete collection of research on financial education, money psychology, and debt behavior research.

Expert Context: I built this quiz because I’ve watched people destroy their financial futures not because they lacked information, but because fear, shame, and panic were making the decisions for them. I know this pattern from the inside: I filed bankruptcy in 1990, and I spent years after that studying why smart people in debt make choices that make things worse. When I ran Myvesta we screened 136 people in debt crisis and found that 49% screened positive for depression symptoms on the CES-D — an elevation over the general population best stated as a range of roughly two to five times, not a single multiplier, after correcting a comparison I had wrong for years. That’s not a side note. That’s the whole problem.

I just launched a new free quiz called “Your Brain on Debt” — and it’s unlike anything else I’ve built in thirty years of helping people get out of debt.

Most money news tells you what happened. I tell you what to do about it.

Every weekday I read the enforcement actions, filings and fine print the outlets skip, and turn them into the one or two moves that actually improve your position — a rate worth moving for, a fee you can refuse, a deadline to beat before it costs you.

In the latest issue (Sep 16): The truck was $28,999 online. At the desk it’s $31,400. As of yesterday, the FTC says the ad was the lie.

I write Your Money Actually most weekdays — actionable money information you will not find anywhere else, and the small decisions that compound. It is free, I sell nothing, and I take no money from any company I write about.

Most debt tools ask about your balance, your interest rate, your monthly payment. This one asks about what’s happening in your head. Because after three decades of watching people navigate debt, I’ve learned something that most financial advisors don’t want to talk about: the numbers are almost never the real problem.

Why I Built This Quiz

When I ran Myvesta — the nonprofit organization I founded in 1994 — we collected data on the people coming to us for debt help. One number stopped me cold: 49% of the 136 people we screened came back positive for depression symptoms — an elevation over the general population best stated as a range of roughly two to five times, a comparison I have since corrected.

That’s not a footnote. That’s the whole story.

When you’re depressed, hopeless, or panicking, your brain doesn’t work the same way it does when you’re calm. The part that handles rational decision-making goes offline. The part that screams “make this stop — right now” takes over. And predatory debt companies know this. Their entire sales model is built around meeting you in that moment.

The result: people in debt consistently make decisions that feel right emotionally but make their situations dramatically worse financially. A five-year debt management plan feels responsible. But when you calculate the retirement savings lost during those five years, the “responsible” choice can cost you $400,000 or more over your lifetime.

Behavioral economists call the underlying mechanism hyperbolic discounting — the well-documented tendency to overvalue immediate relief and undervalue future cost when under stress. Research from the National Bureau of Economic Research has confirmed this effect in financial decision-making for decades. The debt industry exploits it every single day.

I built this quiz to help people see which of these emotional forces is most affecting their thinking right now — before they sign anything.

Brain states in debt management showing survival mode, high anxiety, shame-driven, and clarity level.

What the Quiz Measures: The 6 Emotional Drivers

The quiz covers six areas I’ve identified over thirty years of watching people make debt decisions under stress. Each one corresponds to a different way emotional pressure distorts financial thinking:

The 6 Section Areas

  • The Urgency Trap — How much of your decision-making is driven by wanting the pain to stop right now, regardless of what it costs you later
  • The Shame Spiral — Whether shame or identity fusion is ruling out your best options (this is where most people unconsciously eliminate bankruptcy from consideration)
  • The Panic Response — Whether anxiety and stress are pushing you toward impulsive action over informed action

  • The Weight of It — The depression dimension: hopelessness, inability to concentrate, feeling frozen
  • The Sunk Cost Trap — Whether you’re staying in a program that isn’t working because stopping feels like admitting failure (and because you’ve already paid so much)
  • Can You See a Way Out? — Your current sense of agency — whether you believe real choices exist for you or whether you feel completely stuck

The 4 Result States

After you complete all 20 questions, the quiz calculates your total score and your sub-scores across each driver area. You’ll receive one of four results:

The Four States

Survival Mode (score 40+): Your brain is in full crisis response. The urgency to escape the pain is overriding rational thinking. This is the state predatory debt companies are specifically designed to exploit — act on it without information and you will almost certainly make things worse.

High Anxiety (28–39): Significant stress is narrowing your decision-making. You’re not in full panic, but you’re making choices under pressure — which means you’re undervaluing long-term cost relative to immediate relief.

Shame-Driven (14–27): Your thinking is clearer than someone in crisis mode, but shame or identity fusion is eliminating options from consideration — particularly bankruptcy, which may well be your best financial path forward.

Relative Clarity (0–13): You’re approaching this more rationally than most people in debt. Your risk is different: assuming the conventional advice is right because it sounds responsible.

The Assumption: “I just need the right debt payoff strategy — the math is what I’m missing.”

What the Research Shows: Most people in debt already know the math. What they don’t know is how much their current emotional state is shaping which options they’ll even consider — and which ones they’ve already ruled out without realizing it. The quiz surfaces what’s actually driving the bus.

One Thing I Built In That Most Debt Tools Skip

Question 16 asks something that most debt advisors never ask: whether you’ve had thoughts that people in your life would be better off without the financial burden you represent.

I included this because the research on debt and mental health is clear — financial distress is one of the strongest predictors of depression and crisis. If someone answers affirmatively, the quiz immediately shows the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline information. No judgment, no delay, no pivot to a sales pitch.

Your debt situation is financially solvable. The crisis it creates isn’t just financial. Both things matter.

What Happens After the Quiz

When you finish, you’ll see:

  • Your overall state and score
  • Your top three emotional drivers, shown as percentage bars
  • An explanation of what that state means for your specific decision-making patterns
  • A next step recommendation tailored to your result
  • A direct link to the Ask Steve chat — with your quiz results pre-loaded so you don’t have to explain from scratch

That last part matters. When you click through to Ask Steve after the quiz, I already know you’re in Survival Mode, or that shame is narrowing your options, or that you’re clear-headed but being sold the wrong solution. We can start from there instead of starting from zero.

After the quiz: Use Find Your Path to get a side-by-side comparison of every debt option — bankruptcy, settlement, credit counseling, doing nothing — and which one fits your specific financial situation.

Key Takeaways

  • The “Your Brain on Debt” quiz is free, 20 questions, no email required, no pitch at the end
  • It measures 6 emotional drivers that research shows consistently lead people in debt toward bad decisions
  • In a CES-D screen of 136 debt-crisis clients, 49.3% screened positive for depression symptoms — a screen and not a diagnosis, and this quiz helps you see where you are on that spectrum
  • Your result connects directly to the Ask Steve chat with your state pre-loaded
  • The 4 result states — Survival Mode, High Anxiety, Shame-Driven, and Relative Clarity — map to specific decision-making patterns and specific risks

The Bottom Line

The “Your Brain on Debt” quiz is the only free debt tool I know of that asks about what’s actually happening in your head instead of your credit report. I built it because after thirty years of helping people with debt — and having been through bankruptcy myself in 1990 — I know that the emotional state you’re in when you make a debt decision matters as much as the math, and often more. The urgency to make the pain stop today is one of the most expensive forces in personal finance. Take the quiz, see your state, and then let’s figure out which option actually serves your future — not just your next five minutes. It’s free, it takes five minutes, and there is no sales pitch waiting at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the “Your Brain on Debt” quiz?

The “Your Brain on Debt” quiz is a free 20-question assessment that identifies which emotional driver — survival mode panic, shame and identity fusion, high anxiety, or relative clarity — is most affecting your financial decision-making right now. It was created by Steve Rhode based on 30 years of helping people navigate debt and on Myvesta’s 2001 research finding that 49% of 136 debt-crisis clients screened positive for depression symptoms.

Is the quiz free? Is there a catch?

It’s completely free. No email address required. No account to create. At the end, the quiz offers a link to the Ask Steve chat — with your results pre-loaded so you can have a more informed conversation — but there is no sales pitch, no product upsell, and no service to buy.

How is this different from other debt quizzes?

Most debt quizzes ask about your balance, interest rate, or monthly income and then recommend a debt payoff strategy. This quiz doesn’t ask about any of that. It asks about your emotional state — the urgency to escape, the shame attached to certain options, the panic driving impulsive decisions, the depression making everything feel impossible. That’s the factor most debt advice ignores, and it’s frequently the factor that determines which choices people will actually consider.

What if I answer questions that indicate I’m in crisis?

If your answers to Question 16 indicate you’ve had thoughts about people being better off without you, the quiz immediately shows information for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — free, confidential, available 24/7. Your debt situation is financially solvable. You deserve support that goes beyond debt advice.

Will my quiz results be shared with anyone?

Your results are shared anonymously in aggregate to help improve the quiz. If you click through to the Ask Steve chat after completing the quiz, your result state and primary emotional drivers are shared with the chat so the conversation can start from where you actually are. No personally identifying information is collected unless you choose to share it in the chat conversation.
