I Can’t Pay My Mobile Phone Bill. Will I Be Able to Get Back Into Australia? – Tom

“Dear Steve,

I was using a mobile with contract base and I had always high amount of bill bt I always paid tht bills on time for more than 1 years bt after that I was running through really bad situation like lost my job and was not able to make money and in the mean time I got my mobile bill around $500 and I couldn’t pay it. so I decided not pay bills any more and stopped using tht service, I am just couple of months back from the date that my contract will be finish bt still I am worried about the bill tht I am still getting and now after 4 to 5 months it has gone to $1500 that makes me think about any could be circumstances. I am on student visa and in 1 month I have to go to my home country for couple of months. So my question is…

With my current situation is it OK if I travel to overseas. Is there any chances of any problem on my way back to Melbourne ?

Tom”

I’m assuming you are in the United States and owe the bill for your mobile phone service to a U.S. carrier. If that’s not correct then let me know what country you are living in.

There should be no issue with the travel into or out of the U.S. because of this debt.

The bill is escalating with because of additional fees and penalties being added to it but I’m more concerned that there may be fraudulent activity on your account that is increasing the balance.

A mobile phone carries more liability than a credit card. If someone clones your phone they can cause huge charges to appear on your bill that you would be responsible for unless you took swift action to notify the carrier.

How did your bill get to $500 and do you have some breakdown on why the bill is now $1,500?

  1. Mobile phone bills in the UK and Australia have terrible terms. Unlike in areas like the U.S. they require you to pay the entire contract and do not offer an early termination fee to let you out.

Your account will be place not in good standing, you will be in collections, and if/when you return you will have to deal with it then but it is not a criminal issue.

Entering the UK with this overdue closed mobile account will not be a problem.

  2. Dear Steve,

Im using a postpaid connection from last 2yrs. Very recently i’ve upgraded my phone. Every month i I should pay $57 including my handset and cap plan. Im in Australia now. Bt due to some personal problems im going back to overseas. I may come back to australia in 2yrs. Im applying for residency here. What will happen if i dont pay my mobile bill? I asked the carrier for solution but they asked me pay $700. I cann’t effort that much at this stage. So could you tell me exactly what will happen? Do they consider it as cheating? Does it effect to my residency? Do i get any court summons?

Because im going to U.K in couple of months. So i need to submit police clearence certificate to the british high commission. So pls guide me in this.

    Thanks alot in advance
