My Brother is Mentally Ill and Has a Tremendous Amount of Student Loans. – Laura

“Dear Steve,

I have and estranged brother for 30 years. He became suicidal and started sending me emails. As a result we got him home and he was such a mess we immediately took him to a psychiatric facility where was admitted for several weeks. He came home to live with me and I realized he has psychosis. He is doing better but as of yet no job.. The onset of his mental illness when he left us 30 years ago and over the years it has gotten worse. The only thing he was good at was school as a result multiple school loans. Unfortunately he was unable to hold down a job. He has a tremendous amount of school loans and no way to pay for it.

How do I help someone that built up a large amount of student loans due to mental illness

Laura”

Dear Laura,

If your brother is permanently disabled and these are government backed student loans he may be eligible to have them discharged.

Debilitating mental illness is a condition which may be approved. To learn more about the Total and Permanent Disability process, click here.
