Consumer Statement:

My sister was scammed through social networking. She has been texting a “soldier” in Afghanastan. After months of texting, the money comes in to play. To make a long story short, he sets her up with a “financial planner”.

The soldier, Dave Allison (?), needs merchandise sent to Africa. My sister purchases the merchandise with her credit card then the “financial planner” calls her with an account # for her to call and pay her credit card. She does it, waits till it posts; calls and ask has the payment went through and is told it has.

She does this about 3 times. I’m telling her that this sounds fishy, but Dave has her blinded. Anyway, my credit cards stop working; I call Bank of America to see why. My sister and I live together; we have 1 credit card that has both of our names on it (we got it about 7 years ago when we purchases t timeshare). I was told that all the payments were going to come back, and because that 1 credit card was used, my credit cards were also closed.

I had already told my sister we were over spending so we were already about $12,000 in credit card debt. Now because of the scam, we are about $32,000 in debt and both of our good credit scores have been ruined.

We have tried talking to the credit card people who have gotten us in touch with Novadebt, which we couldn’t afford so was told to file bankruptcy.

We do not want to do that because we do owe on our cards. We have since talked to Take Charge of America which is better but will make it hard for the next 4 to 5 years. I have had to go to part time work due to my health; I believe this is part of our original $12,000 debt. We cannot make the payments as is on the 1 card that is the highest amount and pay our regular bills. My sister is the one with all the information (dates, emails, etc…)

Consumer Action Taken:

We have called the credit card companies involved (Bank of America, Chase and Discover). They just put us in touch with Novadebt now Take Charge America.

We have filed a FBI report, called credit bureaus for alerts. Closed old checking accts and opened new ones.
