Dear Paul,

First off, you should use my public benefits finder tool to see if you are eligible for any public benefits, such as Medicaid, that may cover your health bills.

If you run up financial obligations, like a hospital bill or credit card debt and can’t pay, in North Carolina your wages can’t be garnished. But you can still be sued and your bank account could be levied. Additionally, will you always live in North Carolina?

To summarize, you will either need to deal with the accumulated debts now, or in the future. If you leave those debts unresolved it will hurt your credit report and your future chances to get ahead, buy a house and get credit.

How much debt do you have?
