The Debt Reduction Department Sent Me a Mailer. Is it Legitimate? – Joseph

By on April 25, 2013

“Dear Steve,

I received in the mail from:

“Debt Reduction Department”
P.O. Box 4668 #66587
New York, NY 10163-4668
877-870-7764

They claim to facilitate a renegotiation of debts directly with my creditors.
I said I didn’t give personal information over the phone, only face to face with local businesses.

Are they legitimate business?

BBB notes?

Joseph”

run away

Dear Joseph,

If you can get me a copy of the mailer, that would be helpful. Details here.

Here is what I can tell you just from the information you gave me. It should go in the trash.

First off, the name is so generic it does not identify any legitimate company.

The mailing address is a Post Office box so we don’t know where the imaginary company is located.

There is no debt company located at the telephone number they listed.

The mailer, which is an advertising piece, sounds like the many other examples that make bold promises but provide little substance.

My advice would be for you to stay as far away from the services offered in the mailer as possible. Run away!

If you are having money troubles I’d suggest you first read How to Get Out of Debt. The Honest and Unvarnished Truth, How Do I Get Out of Debt Quickly? Change Your Mindset, and The Truth About The Success Rates, Failure Rates and Completion Rates of Credit Counseling, Debt Settlement, and Bankruptcy. They will give you a great overview of what we need to deal with to get you moving in the right direction.

Then use the free How to Get Out of Debt Calculator to review your options.

Once you’ve identified a company you want to work with, then follow my step-by-step guide on what you should look for and expect from a good debt relief company.

Please post your responses and follow-up messages to me on this in the comments section below.

Just a heads up, i got a different scam with the exact PO BOX within the email. The scam is for domain renewal. It seems this PO BOX is constantly being used to scam people for money.
