I Gave StudentLoanServices.us My Social Security Number. – Anna

“Dear Steve,

I filled out the information on the website for Studentloanservices.us. They called me. We talked, wanted my PIN for my loan, I did not know what that was. Then she said to give my SS # and she could find the information that way.

I am an idiot, I gave it to her. Then she told me what my PIN was from whatever she looked up. I refused the service after she started pressuring me. Just said I would be in touch. Got online and found your website.

How can I protect whatever they can do with that SS#? Do you think something can happen, and where do I need to look?

Anna”

Dear Anna,

Well if one thing came from this it reinforced your gut feeling you should not give out your social security number or FAFSA PIN. There is no sense wasting a perfectly good mistake so the more you can learn from this experience, the better.

The odds are nothing bad will happen but you can do two proactive things to ease your mind.

The first is to consider an identity theft monitoring service to keeps tabs on your accounts and credit reports for any suspicious activity.

Second, you should immediately go and change your FAFSA PIN number. You can do that at pin.ed.gov.
