“Dear Steve,
I have poor credit due to a divorce, I have SEVERAL collections and one judgement against me. I do not know in what order I should start to pay them off.. or if at all since some of them will begin to “disappear” off my credit report soon due to the seven year. rule. I am wanting to buy a home within the next year or so but my credit score is in the low 500’s from all 3 credit reporting agencies.
What should I pay off to get the most bang for my buck as far as my credit score/report are concerned?…. I have copies of my credit report if you need them.
Natalie”
Dear Natalie,
Rather than guess what is hurting your credit the most, lets go right to the source. I strongly recommend that you get a copy of this consolidated credit report and get the credit score option with it. The credit score on the consolidated credit report will tell you specific recommendations to best improve your credit score.
The reason this is the best way to go is that the credit score and suggestions actually come directly from the very people that calculate your score to begin with.
I can give you some generalizations but with a credit score in the low 500s you really need to be as targeted and precise as possible if you hope to get your score up significantly by the time you want to buy a house.
