Update 12-7-2014
The site was contacted by a Shaw T. Scovel who said, “I need someone to call me. I want my named removed from your site. If you don’t I will take legal action.”
The person responded with “Shaw Thomas” when I said I could not locate a Scovel on the site.
As I told “Shaw Thomas” or Shaw T. Scovel, “Feel free to respond to the consumers post. If you disagree with what they posted, say so in comment or submit a statement using the report error link on the page.”
Consumer Statement:
I searched around on the internet for assistance with student loan consolidation. I received a phone call from a company called Student Loan Aid. The caller said his name was Shaw Thomas and that he could help me lower my monthly payments, raise my credit score and help me pay off my Federal loans through Great Lakes with a better interest rate. He also said that the payments would be based off of my yearly income.
He asked for my social security number, bank account info, FAFSA pin and login info, Great Lakes login info and personal things like birthdate, home address, contact info etc. After all that, he told me he could get my payments down to $36.08/month but that I needed to make an initial payment of $286. Both of which would be automatically withdrawn from my account.
Shaw emailed me a document to eSign and said the sooner I send it back, the quicker he could get the ball rolling because it takes a while for them to pay off my account with Great Lakes. I asked if I needed to make my GL payment for the month of Sept and he said no that they would take care of it for me.
I signed the document and was told I would receive a followup email with my login and password info so I could access my account online using their website. I never received anything so I emailed Shaw, but never got any response.
A week later I got an email from Great Lakes saying my payment was due, but I was told that the account would be paid off. So I called SLA and spoke with a female name Jenny (I think). Jenny did not have a clue what I was talking about and when I asked her if I could have my login and password for the website she proceeded to give me my own info for my Great Lakes account- without verifying my identity.
Also, that was not the info I needed. I asked her about the Great Lakes account and why that was not paid off yet, she said it takes up to 45 days for the paperwork to go through and that they “got it” and I don’t need to worry about it.
She was extremely unprofessional and kept placing me on hold for 5-10 mins at a time with no new information for me once she got back on the line. Once she actually emailed me login info for their website I tried to login and it didn’t work. I called back and she said she would transfer me to the IT dept. I was placed on hold for almost 20 mins. I hung up after that. They have since withdrawn the $286 from my account even after I sent an email saying that I would like to close my account with them.
Website does not work- each link you click on takes you to a page that says “page not found”.
