I Still Owe Citibank Bahrain but Have Left the Country

Written by Jon Emge

“Dear Jon,

Have a credit card released from Citibank Bahrain, left the country 4 months ago, debt left is 1,500BHD, I am now in Europe.

Wanted to know which consequences if I don’t pay it back.

Tommaso”

Tommaso,

Just a quick couple of questions:

Do you have the means to pay back the debt, even if on a monthly repayment plan? Have you been in contact with the bank?

Regarding consequences, the bank will probably try to contact you to collect the account.

They may not have any authority to try and collect the account outside of their area, but they could use an outside collection agency to try and collect the debt, or sell the account onto an outside agency to try and collect it. As to the extent and authority those collection agencies may have, will depend on what country you are now living in and the collection and debt laws there.

Regards,

Jon
