Will I Be Turned Down for a Corporate American Express Card? – Beverly

“Dear Steve,

I have been out of work for 6 mos. and am a single mom. I just got another job! They want to get me a corporate american express but I’m afraid I’ll get turned down, they’ll find out about my credit and I’ll NOT have a job. This company is well established and had been in business since 1930-something.

What has been your experience with individuals with bad credit getting approved for their employer’s corporate Amex?

Dear Beverly,

First, congratulations on landing the new job. I be you are relieved about that.

I would suspect that if you were in one of the few positions that was limited by credit history that they would have completed a pre-employment credit screening. Since you did not go through that process or hear that you could not be hired because of your past credit I bet that it will not impact your job.

If the employer is guaranteeing the corporate American Express card then your recent checkered credit past is not so detrimental.

If however the company is asking you to apply for a corporate card based on your credit history then you might get rejected.

Being rejected isn’t the end of the world and you would certainly not be the first person to wind up in that position with that company. This is a situation they have faced before and I’m sure they have a process for dealing with it.

My advice, don’t freak out. Follow the process through and if you are rejected, ask about alternative options for the card. Some employers use a prepaid-stored value card for employees that need to travel and deposit an estimation of the travel funds onto the card. With this approach anyone can get a card regardless of past credit.

You are not alone. I'm here to help. There is no need to suffer in silence. We can get through this. Tomorrow can be better than today. Don't give up.
