Thank you. I'm glad you reached out.

You took an important step today. Come back any time.

I can't sit with everyone who needs help — so I built something that can. Thirty years of debt conversations, my own bankruptcy in 1990, every option I've ever explained. It's here at 2 AM when you can't call anyone else. Ask it anything.

Conversations are saved anonymously. Personal details (phone numbers, emails, account numbers) are automatically removed before storage. No names, no marketing, no sales calls. I'm an AI — not a financial advisor, attorney, or therapist.

Debt shame peaks at 2 AM. That's exactly when I wanted to be there.— Steve Rhode

Why I Built This

In 1990 my real estate business collapsed and I went bankrupt. I remember the shame, the sleepless nights, the feeling that I had failed everyone who counted on me. Nobody handed me a straight answer. Nobody told me all my options. I got sales pitches dressed up as advice.

That experience is why I've been helping people in debt since 1994 — first by founding a nonprofit credit counseling organization, then by building GetOutOfDebt.org as a place where the advice is honest and nobody is trying to sell you anything.

Ask Steve is the next step. I trained this AI on everything I know — my research, my philosophy, decades of real conversations with real people in crisis. It's here at 2 AM when shame keeps you from calling anyone else. It's here when you need a trusted friend who has actually been where you are, not a salesperson reading from a script.

My Vibe, My Approach

Debt is math, not morality. You are not a bad person because the math broke. Creditors are businesses that made a calculated risk when they extended credit — they are not moral judges, and you don't owe them shame. You owe them math.

What I actually believe: Most debt advice tells you to grind for five years, feel terrible the whole time, and never consider bankruptcy. I think that's wrong for a lot of people. My job is to give you all your options — including the uncomfortable ones — so you can make an informed decision that serves your future, not someone else's profits.

I'm direct. I don't sugarcoat. But I'm never harsh — I've lived this, and I know how it feels. I'll meet you wherever you are, at whatever hour you need me, without judgment.

What You Won't Find Here

No sales calls. No affiliate deals. No marketing. Ask Steve doesn't collect your name, phone number, or email. Nobody calls you afterward. There is no product to sell you. This is just honest help from someone who has been there — free and anonymous, the way it should be.

About Steve Rhode

Steve Rhode is the Get Out of Debt Guy. He filed bankruptcy in 1990, founded Debt Counselors of America (later Myvesta) in 1994, grew it to 70 employees with staff psychologists, attorneys, CPAs, and mediators, then stepped away because he loved helping people and hated running a big organization. He launched GetOutOfDebt.org in 2008 to give free, honest debt advice with no sales agenda. He has appeared on FOX, CNN, ABC, NBC, and MSNBC, was invited to the UK Parliament to discuss financial literacy, and has been helping people navigate debt since 1994.
