I Moved Back to the UK and Contacted About a Debt I Don’t Recognize From 2005. – Jen

“Hi Jon

I have just received a letter out of the blue from a company who say they purchased my debt from a catalogue company.

All the letter says is that the account was opened in 2005 and I have had no contact with anyone regarding such a debt in those 7 years. The strange thing is, I paid off everything I owed anyone in 2007 before I moved to the USA.

I returned to the UK in 2010 and this is the first I’ve heard about it (in 2012). In addition, my credit score is very good, and has always been very good and there is no record of any account being opened in 2005 on my credit file.

I have existing accounts with the same catalogue they claim I owed the debt to. Do you have any idea what could be going on? I have checked the website of the company and it seems legitimate, but this alleged debt does not exist anywhere except on the letter I have received.

Jen”

Jen,

Debts do get sold to collection agencies, and sometimes there can be confusion as the debt gets sold as someone is paying it off, there may be additional charges added, etc.

You can contact the original creditor to see what details they have, and also show documentation to the collection agency that you paid the debt off.

Is it possible you missed paying an account?

Try the above and get back to me and we’ll look more at this.

Regards,

Jon
