Rhode Island Lawsuit Update on https://getoutofdebt.org Complaint

By on February 2, 2017

It’s not often I get to write about the https://getoutofdebt.org site and a legal story but here is an update about a case in Rhode Island. You can read the history of the case here.

Here are some excerpts that the Providence Journal published on the case.

“A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit aimed at removing from the Internet comments criticizing California debt relief companies, finding that the suit itself was a fake.

“Public Citizen Litigation Group, a consumer advocacy group, challenged the lawsuit in November, asserting that it was a fake, with the sole purpose of getting search engines to remove stories that criticized the debt relief companies.

In ruling this week, Smith agreed, concluding that the order was “procured through fraud on the court.” The judge cited statements by Smith’s lawyer that he didn’t even file the lawsuit.”

You can read the court order here.
