Dear Jerry,

Yes, unless you identify yourself as a victim of identity theft. You will need to file a police report and the card company may file criminal charges against her.

If you don’t do this then you will either have to legally prove you did not sign and the credit card company may pursue your daughter for fraud or you can pay it and avoid all the consequences of being a victim of a financial crime.

I find that identity theft is most often perpetrated by people we know. Family and roommates have the easiest access to our information.

  • When I was in college I did this because I was I supporting my mother my money wasn’t stretching far enough. When the card came I told her what I did and why. I gave her the log in to see the payments being made And all the information to close it if she really wanted to. She was furious but She didn’t and I paid it every month faithfully before any other bill. Eventually I qualified for my own cards. I paid off the balance on that card and forgot about it until I read this. Now that I am fully grown I do see how wrong I was. Just because I planned to make every payment doesn’t mean I would be able too.

Since this is your daughter you could just let her pay the payments you could also close the account while she does this is necessary. Sometimes peoples intentions aren’t the worst that we think they are and if she wasn’t just being malicious maybe you can give her a chance.
