“Dear Steve,

Between my husband and i we have three jobs and we are so far behind on everything. and we have three kid we are doing our best by. What can we do to leagally get out of our debt?

Mindy”

Dear Mindy,

Getting out of debt is not all about working harder. You can work as hard and as many jobs as a human can and still not dig yourself out of a deep, dark debt hole.

At times like yours I think you need to try to be honest with yourself about how far your current efforts and income are going to take you to resolve your situation. If you are only slipping further behind then it might just be time for you to throw in the towel and reboot your financial life with bankruptcy. Bankruptcy is a legal way out of debt and the only one enforced by the legal system. Other options like debt settlement or credit counseling must be mutually agreed efforts with your creditors for them even to have a shot at success.

I think that even if you are against bankruptcy, you owe it to your kids for you and your husband to go and meet with a local bankruptcy attorney to discuss what bankruptcy would mean for you. You can click on this link to get a free bankruptcy consultation.

Then after meeting with the bankruptcy attorney I want you to ask yourself if the current path is going to fix either your past or your future. It probably isn’t. In that case you have a greater responsibility to fix the future and not the past.

Come back and let me know what you decide to do.
