I Want to Repossess My Brothers Car. – Nicole

“Dear Steve,

My brother needed help with getting a car. So me being the nice sister I am agreed to help, not knowing he was not going to keep any of his jobs figuring a 21 year old does not have to worry about life must be. I gave him numerous chances to redeem himself. Finally I told him I am going to take the car. Again a 21 year old throwing a fit and making everyone feel bad that I am taking the car was just amazing. I am pretty sure he wont hand over the keys without a struggle.

If the car loan is in my name, the insurance, title, plates, and registration are in my name can I bring the cops with me to make sure he gives me the car when I drive 4 hours to go and get it?

Dear Nicole,

I’m not surprised by much these days and I would expect your brother to give you a fight about handing it back. But after all, it is technically your car and really not his to hand back since you own it.

I’d suggest that you call the local police department where he lives and explain the situation to them. I’m sure they’d coordinate an officer going with you to avoid a confrontation when you see your brother to pickup the car.

It’s a sucky situation but it sounds like you are doing what you need to do to protect yourself from an irresponsible borrower, who just happens to be your brother.
