Consumer Complaint: A few years ago, I contacted XXXX XXXX / Navient about the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. I asked if my loans were eligible, if they could be forgiven in 10 years, and I was told they were and would be. I was given the impression I needed to do nothing but wait until the 10 years was up when they would be automatically forgiven. Last year, I submitted the PSLF forms, however I never heard anything from XXXX XXXX / Navient. Recently, I called them only to discover that the loans are not technically eligible as they are ; they must first be consolidated and the 10-yr clock begins upon consolidation ( not when I began my XXXX ).
The lender either originally lied or provided incomplete or misleading information. And this important but unstated detail may cost me as much as {$17000.00} ; had I known I needed to consolidate 3 years ago, I would have. Now, it is too late to benefit from the program ( for the loans managed by XXXX XXXX / Navient ).
I also want to include my story into those that say lenders such as XXXX XXXX / Navient steered borrowers toward forbearance, which then capitalized interest. In a few instances, I may have put my loans into forbearance as my job status and pay were insecure ( XXXX part-time, without any security for pay or contract ), but these were always done without the appropriate information upfront that loans would be capitalized afterward. I agree that rather than forbearance, lenders should have been advising all possible options, including a lower payment given current income ( all loans have been eligible for IBR at the least ). In some cases, I still may have needed to take the forbearance. But who can make the best decision without all the appropriate information?
