“Good Guy” Christian Debt Relief Provider Gets 13 Years in Prison.

Gary Kent Allan was sentenced to 13 1/2 years behind bars for his debt relief services he sold to consumers.

Allan convinced people who were in dire financial straits to hire him to negotiate with their creditors, refinance their mortgages, make payments on their behalf and reduce their debt, according to court documents.

Allan operated as Christian Credit Consultants and promoted his services through Christian businesses and churches.

After Allan was charged in 2010 for his debt relief activities he continued his debt relief scheme and continued to take money from consumers.

Allan urged his clients to not speak to their creditors or pay any of their loans. He then took money from their accounts but is said to have kept most of it as fees, never resolving the underlying debt.

Pima County prosecutors say 62-year-old Gary Kent Allan also must pay eight victims some $267,000 in restitution.

They say Allan convinced people who were in dire financial straits to hire him to negotiate with their creditors, refinance their mortgages, make payments on their behalf and reduce their debt. He was accused of siphoning more than $267,000 for himself, causing several of his customers to lose their homes and life savings.
