The FAFSA I Had to Complete for My Son to Get a Student Loan is on My Credit. – Kim

When my son graduated from high school I had to complete the FSFA in order for him to get a student loan. We went into this knowing he was responsible for the loans and I would always help when I could. I never realized that his loans which are still not due are showing up on my credit file. From what I read parents have no choice but to fill this paperwork out until the child is 24.

How is that legal to place his loans on my file. He was not a minor but could not file under his own name. What is a parent has nothing to do with their child? How do I get these loans off of my credit file.

Thanks for your insight.

Kim

  1. Kim,
It seems you are being treated as a co-signor on your sons student loan. If you did indeed co-sign it will appear on your credit reports.
Look over all of your sons FAFSA apps and documents to learn what you agreed to when you sent in your tax returns etc.
Speak with school administration and the loan servicing entity to get additional details.
Please post additional detail in the comment section as you learn more.
