The Answer

Dear Melissa,

Let’s start with the basics.

I’d suggest you first read How to Get Out of Debt. The Honest and Unvarnished Truth and The Truth About The Success Rates, Failure Rates and Completion Rates of Credit Counseling, Debt Settlement, and Bankruptcy. They will give you a great overview of what we need to deal with to get you moving in the right direction.

Then use the free How to Get Out of Debt Calculator to review your options.

After that, come back here and comment about what seems to make the most sense and let’s discuss that.

Does that sound like a reasonable approach?

I would stay away from them if they are pitching a 4 year plan. What is the sign up fee? Debt Settlement programs are not allowed to charge sign up fees any longer. Some might argue an attorney exemption, but, there are plenty of programs that not longer charge those fees. So at minimum never enroll in a program that is trying to charge you upfront. If you can’t afford to settle your debt in less than 4 years, then settlement doesn’t sound like a very good option for you.
Before you do anything you should meet with a bankruptcy attorney. If you tell me what city you live in I can check my database and see if I know of any good ones that you can meet with for a free consultation.

Stay away from Horizon though. 4 year plan with a payment that you can barely or possibly not afford and an enrollment fee. Forget it. That is not going to end well.
