I Am In Debt to Online Casinos. – Trish

“Dear Steve,

I owe $25,000 on credit cards, loans and overdraft used for online casinos.

How can I reduce these?

Dear Trish,

The residual debt is just the symptom of the greater issue, gambling.

While I don’t know your age, I do know you are a woman. Online gambling is primarily used by middle-aged women who are seeking easy access to have fun, escape, relaxation, to socialize or to hopefully win money. And if your favorite online game is slots or bingo, you fit the average female online gambler demographic, perfectly.

Until you can address the issues that lead you to gamble or want to gamble, getting out of debt will be pointless. While you might be able to reduce the amount you owe now, the underlying compulsion that is driving your need to gamble is still hungry and must still be fed.

As crazy as it sounds, until you seek treatment for your excessive gambling, I’m not in a big rush to reduce the stress of your money pressure. If the debts has become too much I’ve seen people use that pain to address the gambling addiction, but I’ve also seen people get so desperate and out of control that they steal from family members and embezzle money from work.

I would urge you to go to a local gamblers anonymous meeting to find some local support. You can find more information about Gamblers Anonymous online. The Gamblers Anonymous meeting directory can be found here.

You are not alone. I'm here to help. There is no need to suffer in silence. We can get through this. Tomorrow can be better than today. Don't give up.
