Question:
Dear Steve,
My ex and I have several Parent Plus loans for education for our son and now that we are divorced are both parties responsible for the total combined debt or each responsible for only the ones in our respective names? There is no mention of the student loans in the divorce settlement.
Jeff
Answer:
Dear Jeff,
The responsible party would be who signed for the loan. The best place to see whose name is on the loans would be to contact the servicer or login to the National Student Loan Data System and look at the details on the loans.
A divorce agreement is just an understanding between the parties on how they plan to deal with finances. It does not change or alter the original liability for a loan.
Sincerely,
You are not alone. I'm here to help. There is no need to suffer in silence. We can get through this. Tomorrow can be better than today. Don't give up.
