Is this legit? My guess is no. But, would like to hear from you …

Dear James,

It is not a legit program. There is no such government program and it is simply a marketing pitch to get you to agree to some program to separate you from your money.

  1. I just found out your website and I couldn’t happier since I too receive these letters and don’t know which ones are legit and am hesitant to respond.

  2. I am a single female just a few years away from retirement age. I am in debt all toll for 25,000 dollars. My credit cards are maxed out. My interest rates are high. My question is are there any trustworthy, reliable debt consolidation agencies out there. Right now I am contiplating bankrupcy as a solution to my financial problem, but only as a last resort. I am a responsible person and know that this is my own doing. I just need some help dealing with this debt. I hope you can advise me on the best way to handle this problem.

  4. No, this is not a government agency! Most of these (including mine) all have the same info and say you may be eligible for a debt relief program through a non-profit ‘501c3’ program. the ‘501c’ just designates that it’s non-profit, and the number, in this case (3) designates the type of non-profit. This one being religious/educational/charitible, etc. In addition, these non-profits are both state and federal tax exempt.

  6. Just because it is a non- profit does not make it “legit” Jack. There are MANY “non-profit” consumer credit counseling companies that are awful and that have hurt consumers. There are legitimate ones too, however there are NO government programs for consumer debt relief on credit cards and unsecured debt. Any marketing company that uses that PLOY is violating federal law. They can not claim to be associated with the government, or government backed. It may connect you to a real company but would you really trust your finances to a company that lies to you in order to scare or con you into reaching back to them?

  7. I too recieved the debt relief letter I was curious because it looks like it actually came from the White House. Though my debt is soooo much higher then they estimated one would think the Gov would know that. Thank you for saving me the hassel of checking it out. SAM

        • Johana, there is a special niche for debt settlement its not for everyone but it does work.  Settlement is best for consumers who cannot afford the payments in a debt management plan and do not qualify or just want to avoid bankruptcy.

Regardless of which debt relief company you choose, the most important thing to avoid are companies that charge upfront fees.

Active Debt has been performance based since 2007 which means we do not charge a fee until a debt is settled.  Why pay for a service that hasn’t been provided?

Also, dont be fooled by attorneys offering to settle your debt but charge “retainer fees”.  These are the same upfront fees but with a new name.

  11. I read an e-mail in your website about this program (GMDR at 1101 Pennsylvania Ave NW 6th floor, Washington DC 20004, USA. Phone # 1-800-753-0376) and you mentioned that this is a scam. I also received a letter from this company. The letter said I have a $21,299 debt although my debt is nowhere near this level. I looked up the phone # with reverse phone look-up and the company who lists it is Integra Telecom.

    Toll Free Number Information for 1- 800 – 753 – 0376
    Company : Integra Telecom

Integra Telecom looks like a good company.

It deals with internet/communication and not debt relief.

Maybe the phone look-up is wrong.

I also think this GMDR is a scam but could you find out which company is behind this scam?
    Thank you,

    Therese
