“Dear Steve,
I found a website on the internet that appeared to offer what I want in doing the heavy lifting of tracking letters to credit bureaus to remove old debts (that are over 7 years) and incorrect data that could be driving my scores down.
The website is the Credit Assistance Network. It looked reasonable. Then I saw a page on their site with the CEO’s name, and did a google search on his name including the word “fraud” and got some hits. Your website had a feature on it – and a caution about some of the things he’s doing, which I found totally useful and helpful.
Is there a company out there that I can pay to do the credit correction letters to bureaus, and track them for me, so I don’t have to do all that work?
I’m not looking for a scam artist that would tell me he can magically do something that’s illegal to promise.
There are so many scam artists that we can’t trust who have built a website that looks crisp and seems legitimate (like its professionally created and in effect that sparkling site builds credibility and trust due to its crisp appearance).
Again, I just want a company that will let me pay them to write the letters to bureaus and help with follow-up. I don’t want to get ripped off in the process. Please let me know if there are any firms or websites that we might be able to trust, or how I could evaluate them to see if any are trustworthy. It is worth it to me to pay someone for such services even though I could do it myself.
David”
Dear David,
It’s such a simple process I think you can do it yourself.
I think the easiest way to do this is to get a consolidated credit report that has all three credit bureaus reported on the same report, side-by-side. This makes is really easy to spot errors.
The report contains information for you to dispute incorrect information and a couple of credit bureaus will let you do it online.
Once you file a dispute in accordance with the credit bureau procedure you will then get a letter back from then in 30 to 45 days with the result of their examination of your issue. Most issues are resolved in one round.
Your letter doesn’t need to be complicated, just point out what’s wrong or in error.
Please post your responses and follow-up messages to me on this in the comments section below.

Their service is a convenience. I hired a similiar company that did a lot to help me. I just googled them and I see they offer a free credit repair kit for people that want to do it on their own. Mr Rhodes, I dont understand why everyone comes down on companies that charge a fee for stuff you can do on your own for free. If you dont want to do it, and want it done professionally you can hire someone to do it for you. Just like mowing your lawn, changing your oil or pulling one of your teeth out. Nothing is free.
I’m not disagreeing with you. The issue typically is not that credit repair assistance may not be a helpful service, the issue is that it is illegal to charge a fee in advance for credit repair services. Many low rate companies ignore the Credit Repair Organizations Act.
