“Dear Steve,
i went to a computer school 9 month course , had to leave weeks prior to graduation for family reasons. 1982 , back in 1991 the irs took my tax return , i now have no paperwork on any of this, im 52 , been thru some health issues for the past few years , no work… i just started working 5 months ago again, but not in a job that can last , homemaking really… can be gone at any time… i tried to go to school online and was told that i have an outstanding school loan. i was told in 1982 that the money owed to me from the school was sent back to cover my loan, and was under the impression that the rest was taken in 1991. so why is there still something out there .
how do i get this forgiven and my doctor has had me under dissabilitie paper to public assistance , until dec 2013 , im working for now but dont know how long.. have several medical conditions. and would really like to return to school and find something i can do online at home… and maybe become someone society would respect . ive always had hard times due to never making enough . what can i do .
Lizzy”
Dear Lizzy,
Well the first thing we need is more information. Do you even know if this was a private or federal student loan?
I would suggest you contact the Department of Education to begin to find out exactly what you owe and who. You can reach them at (800) 848-0979 or (315) 738-6634. You can also us the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) at nslds.ed.gov.
If you can track down some specifics and then post an update for me in the comments we can then embark on how to deal with the loans.
Please post your responses and follow-up messages to me on this in the comments section below.

You are not alone. I'm here to help. There is no need to suffer in silence. We can get through this. Tomorrow can be better than today. Don't give up.
