“Dear Steve,
I was a client of the Johnson Law Group (Jonathan Rufus) 2009-end of 2010 early 2011. I had consolidated my credit card debt. They managed to pay off all but the ONE BIG ONE. They took out $400 from me monthly for 18months and never paid off the big one I asked them to negotiate. I now.. have no way of contacting them as the number has been disconnected. I have called the FL Bar… no clue what I need to do whom I need to talk to. With $400 taken out they have well over $6,000 of mine and have not paid debt in which I owe. No paperwork was ever given to me other than what was in fact paid to the ones they were able to pay off (2) minor debts. Please advice as to whom I should contact!!! HELP needed!!!
When a company like this goes out of business and they have your money… what do I do? No way to get in touch with anyone… who do I contact?
Ashley”
Dear Ashley,
It is my understanding the Florida Bar took over the files and accounts of attorney Clint Johnson. A receiver was appointed.
To start digging on your own it might make sense to see what bank or entity took money out of your account each month and call that entity and see if you can find out if that account still exists.
As I remember, Johnson was not using a third party escrow company and was taking the money and holding it in his attorney client trust account.
You might want to file a claim with The Florida Bar Clients’ Security Fund, click here for more information.
The Clients’ Security Fund was created to help reimburse you for money you may have lost because of misappropriation or embezzleÂment by your attorney.
Please post your responses and follow-up messages to me on this in the comments section below.
