Everest Institute Did Not Help Me Get a Job in Medical Billing and Coding. – Ashley

Written by Steve Rhode

“Dear Steve,

I went to Bryman Institute in 2007 for medical billing and coding. While I was there they changed the name to Everest Institute which was a red flag to me but I was already in the program for a while so there wasn’t much for me to do.

I successfully completed the program and got a job at the place I did my externship. The job was part time with not much pay but I stayed for 3 years. I was put on bed rest when I was got pregnant in 2009 for the last 2 months of my pregnancy and after giving birth I became a stay at home mom.

Since graduating from the school I have heard a lot of not so great things about the school like a class action law suit against them because they were charging for room and board, transportation, and other things that they shouldn’t have charged for.

I never really looked into it myself so I am not sure how true it is. I also heard the school has a bad reputation with places so having that on my resume makes it hard to get a job.

I have applied many places and have not been successful with finding a job in my field. I haven’t paid on the loans and they are in default now.

My dad was paying on them and we even thought he paid it off but come to find out I have 3 different loans which I didn’t know that I thought it was just one loan and he only paid off one of the loans which didn’t really put a dent in over all total amount.

I have also called the school’s career services department and was told there was a list of places looking to hire people in my field but never got a call back with that list and when I called back I was told they didn’t have anything right now.

My question is what can I do about my situation with the loans. I am not employed right now. Is there any programs that could help me with this situation.

I would like to file bankruptcy but I was told I couldn’t because you can’t put student loans on bankruptcy which I think is not fair because I have tried to find work but I really think me going to that school is the reason I can’t get a job in that field.

I also have another ? not sure if you can answer but I was told that when I get married my fiance’s house could get took because of my student loans but my name is not on the house at all, is this true or was the debt collector trying to scare me into paying? My loans were through Sallie Mae.

Student Loan Corkboard Concept

Dear Ashley,

If your name is not on the house they can’t place a lien on the property. Don’t worry about that.

If your loans are government guaranteed loans then you do have some excellent options. See The Ultimate Guide to Dealing With Student Loans You Can’t Afford.

If the loans are private student loans then only the programs the lender may elect to offer are available.

People go to school all the time and take out student loans for it, hoping it will pay off in the long run. Sadly, 75 percent of those that owe on student loans, never graduate. And those that do are not guaranteed a job, but guaranteed to have the debt.

  • Bryman caught me by standing outside of the welfare office and handed me a flyer when i was leaving. I asked if they were accredited and poof he was on the phone with an enrollment specialist. I had an appointment for a tour the next day, ok I’ll go look but I wasn’t going to enroll. come to find out my enrollment was already filled out for me when I got there. All I had to do was sign my name, find a babysitter, and purchased a scrub outfit. I was enrolled.

  • Steve, ironically the ads on this story are for yet another shady for-profit “school”.

    • Google shows contextual ads based on what the surfer has visited before or they think you will like. Different people see different ads based on whatever formula they have. Ironic though.

  • I was a victim of this. I went to Bryman College in 2001. I got a Medical Administrative Assistant certificate. They actually guaranteed lifetime job placement. I could not find a job as a coder or biller. No place would hire me with no experience. I had to find my own internship at a call center and I was hired on making more then minimum wage but not by much and then I have these student loans I cannot afford looming over me stealing my tax refunds and ruining my credit because I cannot afford to pay them. I definitely feel it was predatory lending I was a young mother of a newborn and a 3 year old working part time making minimum wage going to school in the morning working at night. I reached out to them a few years ago about the lifetime job placement and I was told I would need a re certification class or refresher or something I am sure that would cost more. I tried again and didn’t hear back. This was after they had changed there name to Everest. I had 3 loans equaling about 10,000. One I didn’t have to pay back (because I was low income) about 3,000, One Bank of America about 3,000 and the rest Sallie Mae started out as 2000 something has ballooned to over 3,000 all while having tax refunds garnished nothing seems to chip away at these balances and the schooling didn’t help me get a job as a biller/coder which pays well or I would of paid them back. Now they are closed down. Empty building. I have never had money for a lawyer so I was always hoping someone would go after them. Pretty much a useless certificate mill. Any lawyers want to help lol?
