Is There Any Free Credit Counseling Help Available? – Everett

“Dear Steve,

What is the best way to repay past debt which has been placed in collection, or written off as bad debt? I am now working and want to satisfy these debts and improve my overall credit worthiness. I called what I thought was CCCS and the phone was answered by Money Management International. After going over all the information on what they could do, I was told that I would have to pay $75 as a start-up fee, and $40 per month maintenance fee. Is there really any free help available?

Everett”

Dear Everett,

Rest assured, Money Management International is a CCCS office.

The only real free help is if you contact your creditors directly and ask them for any special payment plans that might be available to help you repay the debt. There is nothing that prevents you from doing that but don’t be surprised if only a couple have something meaningful to offer.

Credit counseling groups don’t really have special dispensation, they just know the terms and process available to get your account into those special programs. It’s not what you, it’s who you know.

Please update me on your progress by posting updates here in the comments section of your question. I’m very interested in how this works out for you.
