It’s Unfair We Can’t Consolidate Our Spousal Consolidation Loan

Question:

Dear Steve,

I am in the same sinking ship (spousal consolidation); however, my wife and I are still together. We are both working for qualified organizations for the Student Loan Forgiveness Program, but AES and DOE will not approve it…Help!!!

I really need help with this. I don’t want to avoid payments or the debt, but I do want to use the Student Loan Forgiveness program…its not fair!!!

Answer:

Dear Larry,

Yes it is unfair but you’ll have to thank Congress for that little nugget. However, I remain unconvinced the regulations don’t permit it. It seems the denial of consolidating spousal consolidation loans is one of practice.

For example, take a look at this post and this one.

For me, the fact these loans are generally said not to be able to be consolidated and then eligible for other programs is not clear to me.
