Will I Be Able to Get a Passport With Student Loan Debt?

Dear Steve,

I co-signed a federal guaranteed student loan for my son over 15 years ago. Just found out he has not paid a dime on it , now they are coming after me for it.I am going to pay this off, but it will take me some time.

Can the government stop me from getting my passport or my social security before I pay this off?

I’m not aware of how that could impact your ability to get a passport. But if you owe federal dollars and don’t come to a suitable repayment plan, it could lead to a tax refund intercept or Social Security garnishment. But it is relatively easy to stop the garnishment.
