Lending Club Won’t Work With Me to Lower My Payments

Question:

Dear Steve,

I owe a personal loan for 5,000 dollars. I was able to put all other debt in a credit counseling program. But Lending Club would not participate. I am on SSI and can’t work. LendingClub won’t work with me by lowering payments or interest rates. I am 90 days late. What can I do?

What can I do to resolve Lending Club debt?

Veronica

Answer:

Dear Veronica,

Because you are on SSI I wonder if there is a need to repay any debt at all if you are having a financial hardship. One entity to talk to about this is HELPS, a non-profit law firm that represents people in similar situations.

My concern is if you are using all available disability dollars and don’t have the ability to save money for future emergencies or retirement.

I understand the desire to repay your past debt but I have reservations that it is an illogical thing to do. And I fully admit my opinion is based on past experience with people in a similar situation and not your particular situation.

Sincerely,

You are not alone. I'm here to help. There is no need to suffer in silence. We can get through this. Tomorrow can be better than today. Don't give up.
